Top 5 Questions to Answer When Naming Your Business
Welcome to the Creative Crossing, episode 2! We are so grateful to have you listening, and hope that our first episode on starting to pursue your dreams left you energized and inspired. In today’s episode, we are going to switch gears a bit and talk about something else that often comes up when starting a business or brand, and that is naming your business. It is so true when they say that naming a business is an art form in itself, and sometimes it takes a few tries…and maybe even actual legal name changes to get it just right. (Which by the way is nothing to be ashamed of)
When you meet someone new, typically, the first thing you learn about them is their name, right? Well, the same goes for a business! Believe it or not, there is a lot of thought and strategy that goes into naming a company just right, as it should because if nothing more, choosing the right name can influence what people first think of your brand early on before they get to know it more fully.
Using a Strategy
Just like when each of us is born, and a name is bestowed upon us when your business is first brought to life, its name will determine what people know it by, and can also influence what people first think of your brand early on before they get to know it more fully. And maybe it’s just my own opinion, but in some ways, I feel like naming a business can be more challenging than naming a child! We came to Lucy pretty quickly when it came to naming our daughter, but The Creative Crossing took some time and strategy.
There are different approaches people can take when it comes to naming a business, but the best and most effective way we like to use is by filling out a “Naming Brief.” For your reference, we have listed the five top questions below to refer back to after the episode. These questions are pivotal to a naming brief, and help ensure the name chosen sends the right message to the right audience, thus driving the desired outcome.
Top 5 Questions
Question #1: What does the company offer, and what makes it unique or stand out from others in the same industry?
Question #2: Who is the target audience?
Question #3: What do you want to convey about the company through its name?
Question #4: What is the long term goal or vision for the company?
Question #5: Are there any registered trademarks or issues with URL availability that you need to consider? This one requires some extra research!
So if you don’t know where to start when naming your business or you already did but feel like the name just isn’t right, you’ve come to the right place. Take a listen to the episode and take notes because we are about to guide you through everything you need to know about naming your business, and who knows, by the end of this episode, you might even leave with a name in mind. Let’s do this!
